Take the time to learn about the potential benefits, the health risks and the many unknowns regarding generic valtrex. It can be frightening to read a list of the side effects of Valacyclovir. More than a few of my patients have immediately assumed that they would suffer from all of them. The truth is that most people will experience none of them, just the benefits of Valacyclovir. Side effects vary from person to person and it is impossible to predict exactly how each individual will be affected. Some characteristics and pre-existing conditions are known to increase the risk from certain side effects. Doctors should assess these factors before advising patients on which drugs to choose. The FDA monitors reports of adverse drug reactions and has found no difference in the rates between generic and brand name drugs.

Valtrex (generic name Valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug used to treat Herpes viruses such as shingles, Genital Herpes and Oral Herpes. It works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA that is necessary when a virus reproduces itself. Valacyclovir is a so called pro-drug which means that it isn't active in itself. It helps relieve and prevent recurrent infections from herpes and genital herpes, also the varicella zoster virus (VSV), including, cold sores and shingles.

Valacyclovir uses

Valacyclovir works best if it is used within 48 hours after the first symptoms of shingles or genital herpes (for example, pain, burning, or blisters) begin to appear . For recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, valacyclovir works best if it is used within 24 hours after the symptoms begin to appear. Your dose may be different if you have kidney disease. Be sure to start treatment within 48 hours after symptoms start otherwise Valacyclovir may not work properly.
