Valtrex (generic name Valacyclovir) is an antiviral drug used to treat Herpes viruses such as shingles, Genital Herpes and Oral Herpes. It works by inhibiting the replication of viral DNA that is necessary when a virus reproduces itself. Valacyclovir is a so called pro-drug which means that it isn't active in itself. It helps relieve and prevent recurrent infections from herpes and genital herpes, also the varicella zoster virus (VSV), including, cold sores and shingles.

Valacyclovir works best if it is used within 48 hours after the first symptoms of shingles or genital herpes (for example, pain, burning, or blisters) begin to appear . For recurrent outbreaks of genital herpes, valacyclovir works best if it is used within 24 hours after the symptoms begin to appear. Your dose may be different if you have kidney disease. Be sure to start treatment within 48 hours after symptoms start otherwise Valacyclovir may not work properly.
The following drugs should not be taken in combination with valacyclovir, as interactions may occur: Adefovir (Hepsera), Entecavir (Baraclude), Medperidine (Demerol, Meperitab), Tenofovir (Viread), Trospium (Regurin, Sanctura, Sanctura XR). Tell your doctor about all existing or previous conditions you may have that could affect your treatment with valacyclovir, including: advanced human immunodeficiency virus (hiv) infection, aged 65 or older, bone marrow transplant, breastfeeding, compromised immune system, dehydration, kidney disease, kidney transplant, pregnant or planning to become pregnant.
